Domesday Book 1086 1841 Census 1861 Census 1891 Census 1901 Census 1911 Census 2001 Census

Thurlaston Census Information

Probably the first census was the Domesday Book (also known as "Domesday", or "Book of Winchester"), the record of the great survey of England completed in 1086, carried out for William the Conqueror. The Domesday Book is the oldest surviving public record in England, and is held in the National Archives in Kew (London). The great survey was similar to a modern day census. The Domesday Book is now online, although Warwickshire section is not yet complete. The 1086 link above will take you to the Domesday Book on-line.

Censuses nowadays are carried out every 10 years, and produce more information each time.

I am greatly indebted to Wendy Bowland, a decendant of the Burton family, who lived in Thurlaston in the early 1800s. Wendy has transcribed the 1841, 1861, and 1891 censuses from the original documents, and has kindly passed them on to me and given me leave to publish them on the Thurlaston web-site. You can see these by clicking on the date links above. Wendy now lives in New South Wales (Australia).

As personal information collected in the census is confidential, the 2001 census only gives the barest of information. Full census information is only published after 100 years. The 1901 (and earlier) census can be found at the National Archives website (1901 link above). Payment has to be made for any detailed information.

There is also quite a lot of information on Warwickshire censuses on Pickard's Pink Pages at: http://www.hunimex.com/warwick/

Please note that some of the census files are quite large and will take some time to load if you are on a slow internet connection.
